Learning outcomes |
1.Knowledge of the most important topics of Portuguese culture;
2.Develop practical work written;
3.Demonstrate ability in oral presentation of the work indicated in the preceding;
4.Demonstrate critical capacity to any issue of Portuguese culture.
The vastness of the chronological scale and of the artistic and spiritual issues implied, imposes some options. It is possible to take, however, some liberties, which highlight, of course, the most interesting topics: The school, books, libraries and the university; the discoveries; the productive culture; the humanism and reform; Sebastianism; António Vieira and utopia; Pombal, enlightenment and academicism, liberalism and romanticism, Generation of Seventy; the option of Republican opposition and culture to the present day. It is evident that, at the end of the course, it is possible an overview of Portuguese culture.

2.The Portuguese identity: unity and diversity.
3.Administrative and demographic developments in Portugal.
4.The first spaces and expressions of Portuguese culture.
5.Dimensions of the Renaissance and Reform in Portugal: Humanism and Erasmism and Inquisition in Portugal; Gil Vicente, Frei Heitor Pinto and Luís de Camões.
6.D. Sebastian and Sebastianism.
7.Padre Antonio Vieira and the "Fifth Empire."
8.The Pombalism, the Enlightenment and the Encyclopedism.
9.The Portuguese Liberalism and the Romanticism in Portugal.
10.New ideas: The generation of the seventies of the nineteenth century.
11.The Republicanism.
12.Modernism and other avant-garde.
13.The culture of the "politics of the spirit" of the New State.
14.The oppositional culture: the Portuguese neorealism, the Christian humanists, existentialists and independents.
15.The Globalization and the Portuguese culture.
