Learning outcomes The main objective of the Curricular Unit is to carry out specific thematic approaches to the research process, crossing them with other knowledges. In this way the students are asked to reflect on epistemological and conceptual questions of the social sciences, which are part of the research and writing of a document processes, embryo of the dissertation, stage or project.
This requires exploring authors, sources, images and following procedures; as well as to be able to delimit its object and field of study, to reflect and to analyse contents, to structure the investigation and do a document’ writing within the rules of scientific production.
Syllabus The CU covers the discussion of the following topics, organized in modules:
MODULE 1: Epistemologies, Theories and Methodologies. Paradigms and Complexity. Epistemological Principles applied in Research in Social Sciences. Theories of Research. The different forms of knowledge about reality. The differentiation between deductive and inductive research. The connection between the scientific and design perspectives.
MODULE 2: Starting question and problem definition. The state of the art, the choice of a theme. The formulation of hypotheses and variables. The usefulness of quotations.
MODULE 3: The link between objectives and the theoretical and methodological definition of the research. Field work in research: data collection. The analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. Project approach in research: imagination, creativity and experimentation.
MODULE 4: Documentary presentation of research results.
