1. Understand the original character and the structuring reach of political experience, in the multiple contexts and human dimensions in which it is reflected
2. To assimilate the theoretical conceptions that underlie ancient and medieval political thought, as well as the respective historical repercussions in the modeling of Western culture

Learning outcomes
Reveal knowledge and understanding of basic conceptual and analytical tools of classical ancient and medieval political theorizations, focusing on political philosophy and the history of ideas and culture
Syllabus 1. The pre-classical origins of political power: the intuitions originating from nomos and demos in Solon
2. The ethical foundation of the power to govern in antiquity: the notions of polis and koinonia in Plato and Aristotle
3. The transcendent ordering of sovereign power in medievality: the ideas of civitas and regnum in St. Augustine and St. Thomas
