Learning outcomes Analyze Portuguese literature from modern period.
By the end of the semester, the student must be able to:
- know the concepts of modernity and modernism;
- develop critical thinking in relation to the literary establishment;
- characterize the literary trends embraced by modernity and by modernism;
- recognize the main writers and magazines aggregators of Portuguese modernism;
- analyze poetry and prose of literary modernity in Portugal.
Syllabus 1. Modernity and Modernism: conceptualization and distinction. Definition of "modernity". Problematization of the distinction 'classic' and 'modern';
2. The poetry of Cesario Verde in the genesis of modern Portuguese poetry. Ideological and aesthetic-coordinate. Analysis of selected poems.
3. Symbolism: characterization, sources of Portuguese symbolism; main figures and texts, the importance of the Symbolist trend in Portuguese literary scene;
3.1. Raul Brandão's novel: «Os Pobres»;
3.2. The poetry of Camilo Pessanha: «Clepsidra»;
4. The First Portuguese Modernism: continuities and rupture in relation to Symbolism. Periodization and characterization aesthetic-ideological. Genesis of «Orpheus». Tutelary figures and major works.
4.1. Poetry of Fernando Pessoa.
5. The second Portuguese Modernism: the generation of «Presença». Periodization and aesthetic and ideological trends. Reference works and authors. Orthodoxy and dissent.
5.1. Poetry of José Régio.

Bibliography is indicated in the first lesson and main references for each syllabus point are recommended during the semester.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Theorical and pratical classes. The teacher has always the purpose of obtain the pertinent intervention of students in class, readind and analysing the texts and making bridges between subjets.
Evaluation by two tests (9 values + 9 values ): 16th november 2023 and 11th january 2024.
Pertinent participation: 2 values maximum, by evaluation of the evarage of the student participation in classes along the semester.

For examen must have 6 values.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
