Learning outcomes At the end of the course unit the student should be able to: know some notions of plant biology and physiology; identify medicinal plants and relate them with their chemical and biological properties; relate the active ingredients and their therapeutic interest; identify the phytopharmaceutical products according to their therapeutic uses, toxicity and possible interactions with other drugs; analyze the natural compounds regarding the extraction and isolation methods used and provide identification of active compounds; know the plant constituents synthesized via the primary metabolism.
Syllabus Theoretical contents: Major taxonomic groups. Plant cell. Cell walls of plants, fungi and bacteria. Primary and secondary metabolism. Plant anatomy and histology. Interest of plant raw materials in the pharmaceutical industry, production and conversion to drugs. Bioactive molecules from land and marine animals. Main plant constituents derived from the primary metabolism – Carbohydrates: simple sugars, oligosaccharides, polysaccharides. Plant Lipids. Compounds with nitrogen. Laboratorial contents: Observation of plant cells.Plant anatomy. Isolation of chloroplasts. Determination of pigments in wine. Research of reducing and non-reducing sugars // Determination of gums and exudates swelling index. Thin-layer chromatography of a sugar mixture. Evaluation of honey samples. Determination of chemical analytical indexes in fatty drugs. Isolation of trimyristin from nutmeg.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Lectures: 2 hours / week. Master classes with power point presentations previously available to students. Laboratory classes: 2 hours / week. All protocols of the laboratory classes and their theoretical explanation are distributed to students at the beginning of the semester. The evaluation will be carried out in two partial tests or a final exam and will consist of 40 multiple choice questions (32 theoretical and 8 from laboratory classes). Student workers with a duly proven situation are exempted from attending the theoretical classes, but must realize the partial tests.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
