Learning outcomes General Objectives of UC
1. To study some of the most important events occurred in the twentieth century, privileging political history.
2. To stimulate the academic debate, the contact with different types of sources, as well as the individual and collective bibliography research on the subjects under analysis.

UC Competencies or Learning Outcomes
At the end of the Course the student should be able to:
1. Analyze, characterize and understand the history of the twentieth century, especially focused in its political aspects.
2. Explain essential concepts and notions in order to understand the history of the twentieth century.
3. Produce written paper work based in on one of the topics of the program.
4. Show oral skills during the paper work presentation.
5. Assuming informed critical attitudes about the problems addressed in class.
Syllabus The 20th Century
Introduction
The dynamics of a century: panoramic vision.
1. The First World War.
2. Communism and the Soviet Union.
3. The crisis of liberal democracies.
4. The fascisms.
5. 1939-1945: the weight of an "even more total war".
6. Cold War and collapse of the Soviet Bloc.
7. The end of the colonial empires: decolonization.
8. The Awakening of Asia.
9. European construction.
Conclusion
The end of the twentieth century and the most important problems and uncertainties that disturb the world.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Expositive classes; discussion classes; practical work; use of audiovisual resources; use of the moodle platform.

Written test: 75%. Group work: 20% = written version 15% + presentation 5%. Participation in class: 5%. Attendance: 50% of classes. Access to exam period: at least 6 points. Special evaluation (TE): according to the ongoing legislation.

Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
