Identify and understand the concepts of “framing”, “stereotyping” and “typification”.
Apply the concepts referred to in the analysis of journalistic and documentary media discourse.

1.5. The Propaganda Model: George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, Noah Chomsky.

1.7. Framing (frame), Priming, Scheduling (Agenda Setting) and mutual relations between the concepts.

2.1. Critical analysis of news media discourse (journalistic)

Ex: representations of gender, “race” and ethnicity, political, club, nationalist bias; specific speeches on current issues: Politics; Science, Culture; Sport; war; crime; illness and health; genre; cultural diversity; the populisms; the corruption; domestic violence; hate speech, etc.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The assessment criteria consists of 2 moments
The first (50%) consists of an individual theoretical test.
The second moment (50%) consists of the presentation, in a group of no more than 4 people, of an analysis of media coverage of a topic in a written or online medium for at least one week. The work must include the analysis of texts, images and videos available during that week.
The written work implies presentation, discussion and approval with the teacher.
Erasmus students without enough skills on Portuguese language will deliver an individual essay on one of the elements of the syllabus.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
