Students should acquire notions about the behavior of structural systems concerning the equilibrium of forces, resistance of materials and structural safety, creating a knowledge base for the design of structures as part of the architectural exercise. These goals are fulfilled through the following competences: a) Ability to understand and analyze the equilibrium of a material point and of structural systems; b) Ability to analyze and understand the equilibrium working of fundamental elementary systems, like trusses, beams, frames, cables and arches; c) Ability to understand and apply safety criteria of structural elements, applying them in their pre-dimensioning; d) Ability to distinguish different materials based on strength and mechanical behavior.
