Learning outcomes The main goal of the curricular unit corresponds to give to the students knowledge that permits to analyze in a correct and efficient way the project of building structures and the better way to relate architectonic and structural aspects. The knowledge about structural project is complemented through the following competencies:
a) Understanding and interpretation about the actions applied in structures;
b) Understanding the application of structural safety criteria;
c) Understanding elementary methods of structural conception and initial design;
d) Understanding the conception of building structures and other special structures.
Syllabus 1. Revision of basic concepts about materials and structural systems. 2. Conception and initial sizing of basic structures. 3. Checking of structural safety. 4. Conception of building structures. 5. Conception of structures taking into consideration the seismic action. 6. Basic concepts about structural rehabilitation. 7. Conception of special structures.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The teaching methodologies are implemented in theoretical and practical lectures. In the first case are presented and discussed the fundamental concepts, with analysis of the consequences resultant from different options and the approximation to the constructed reality, through the presentation and discussion of reference cases. The the practical lectures exists the accompanied resolution of problems, in which the theoretical knowledge is applied in terms of the design of structural systems, initial sizing, form-finding and analysis of the relation between form and forces. The evaluation is composed by written tests and individual practical works.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
