Entry requirements Knowledge of building materials.
Learning outcomes The curricular unit of Building Physics aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of thermal and acoustic behaviour of buildings. The following competencies will be developed in this curricular unit:
a) Knowledge on thermo-hygrometric comfort parameters, climatic parameters and building thermal envelope;
b) Knowledge on heat transfer phenomenon;
c) Ability to calculate the physical parameters of the opaque and glazed elements, parameters to qualify the thermal inertia, parameters relating to air renewal and verification of minimum requirements;
d) Knowledge on the calculation of energy balances in buildings and the legislation in force;
e) Ability on acoustic correction process, air and impact sound transmissions in buildings;
f) Knowledge of legislation and ability to carry out regulatory checks on building acoustic requirements.
Syllabus 1) Thermal behaviour of buildings: Energy efficiency and thermal comfort; Indoor environment in buildings; Climate conditions; Characterization of the thermal envelope of buildings; Heat transfer; Coefficients of thermal transmission; Transmission heat transfer in the elements of the envelope; Heat transfer associated with air renewal; Gross solar gains and gross internal gains; Thermal inertia and useful thermal gains; Checking of minimum requirements; Energy balances in heating and cooling seasons; Energy associated with the preparation of AQS; Renewable energy; Passive systems for air conditioning; Technical systems for air conditioning and AQS; Primary energy and CO2 emissions; Energy class; Regulatory requirements.
2) Acoustic behaviour of buildings: Acoustic correction (reverberation time); Geometric acoustics; Sound insulation to aerial and percussion sounds; Simplified calculation methods; Regulatory requirements.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria This curricular unit has a duration of one semester, involving 60 h of contact in classes, 70 h of autonomous work and 10 h of evaluation. The approval in this curricular unit grants the student 5 ECTS. Contact hours include 30 h of theoretical classes (T) and 30 h of practical classes (PL). The evaluation is carried out in two phases, continuous evaluation and exam, allowing the student to dispense the exam if he approves in the continuous evaluation. The minimum requirements (attendance and classification) to be admitted to the exam, as well as the continuous and exam evaluation criteria, are established annually by the coordinator of the curricular unit observing the following: the continuous evaluation include test(s) (50 to 100%), practical works (0 to 50%) and participation (0 to 10%); the evaluation by exam include a test (60 to 100%) and practical works (0 to 40%). The practical works done in continuous evaluation cannot be improve in exam.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
