Learning outcomes This course aims for students to deepen and integrate the knowledge previously acquired in solving concrete industrial problems. Faced with a proposed problem, the student will analyse it using available scientific, technical and technological information, propose hypotheses for problem solving as well as plan and perform experimental procedures to solve it, taking into account the specific requirements of the sector, target industry and the technical and economic feasibility of the proposal.
At the end of the course students should be able to create biotechnological solutions to problems identified in various industries, as well as have improved their ability to present scientific subjects, argumentation and group work.
Syllabus The syllabus of this course will be dynamic and updated each year according to the real needs of the companies that are collaborating. Some studies will be selected each year in companies in the region or with which collaboration protocols have been established in various areas: food, textile, agro-industrial, environmental, pharmaceutical and chemical processes. The case studies may be real company issues or new product development.
For each case study students will perform the following tasks:
Identification, discussion and presentation of hypotheses to solve the proposed problem.
Performing experimental work when applicable
Final presentation of the solution to colleagues, faculty and industry staff.
Whenever necessary, teachers will organize invited specialists seminars and / or company visits to help clarify the ideas and solutions to the problem under study.
Main Bibliography Books and scientific articles, Databases and sources of specialized information depending on the problems presented.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria In order to obtain the desired learning outcomes and competences, several problems will be distributed, identified during visits to industrial units linked to the food, agro-industrial, pharmaceutical, chemical, environmental or other sectors, which will be worked out by the students, organized in groups (2 students).
The responsible for the UC will monitor all groups, including time management for each phase, as well as aspects related to process engineering. The different teachers of UC will follow the groups considering their scientific valences for the problems under study.
The classes will have the format of theoretical-practical and will take place in a tutorial system in which the learning process is centred on the student. Assessment Methods:
- Continuous assessment focusing on valuing individual work, motivation, student's ability to overcome / circumvent obstacles and present coherent / reasoned alternatives (50%)
- Written and oral presentation of the proposed solution(50%)
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
