Year 2
Semester S1
ECTS Credits 6
Workload T(32H)/TP(32H)
Scientific area Physics and Chemistry
Entry requirements N/A.
Mode of delivery Theoretical, theoretical and practical, Laboratory.
Work placements Not included.
Learning outcomes Provide knowledge of electromagnetism and optics, at theoretical, theoretical and practical levels, including the conduct of laboratory work.
At the end of the course the student should demonstrate knowledge of the creation of electromagnetic fields by charges and currents, actions of fields on charges, materials in the presence of static electric and magnetic fields. Have notions about transients in electrical circuits and AC circuits. Show understanding Maxwell's equations, electromagnetic waves and basic phenomena of optics. Learn to solve problems. Understand and know how to perform laboratory work on the subject.
Syllabus 1. Electrostatics. Electrostatics in vacuum and in materials.
2. Continuous Current. Fundamental laws and DC circuits.
3. Magnetostatics. Magnetostatics in vacuum and in materials.
4. Varying electromagnetic fields. Electromagnetic induction. Displacement current density. Circuit elements in quasi-stationary regime. Maxwell's equations in vacuum. Conservation of energy and power. Maxwell's equations in materials. Transients in electrical circuits. Alternating current.
5. Electromagnetic waves. Maxwell's equations for fields with sinusoidal variation. Wave equations in vacuum. Polarization. Electromagnetic spectrum. Wave equations in homogeneous, linear and isotropic materials. Electromagnetic waves in materials. Reflection and refraction of electromagnetic waves at plane interfaces. Laws of reflection and refraction (Snell – Descartes Laws). Interference, diffraction.
