Learning outcomes - Gain wider knowledge of the social, cultural and economic history of the U.S. over the past century.
- know the main literary movements of the 20th-century United States.
- Develop theoretical knowledge and critical skills. To Students show a deeper understanding of anlgophone literatures and cultures of the 20th century, have are able to recognise central values and beliefs for these cultures during and beyond modernism(s), and develop theoretical, critical and research skills, towards the writing of scientific papers.
Syllabus 1. Social, cultural and economic history of the nineteenth century America.
2. Trends and American literary movements throughout the twentieth century.
3. Developments in the American short story over the last century.
4. American 20th century drama, poetry and fiction.
5. Critical analysis of representative texts of various authors: Gertrude Stein, Scott Fitzgerald, Zora Neale Hurston, William Faulkner, Flannery O’ Connor; Wallace Stevens, Amy Lowell, Langston Hughes, Sylvia Plath; Eugene O’Neill and Tennessee Williams.
