Learning outcomes The aim of this course unit is to provide the students with the fundaments and techniques of rhetoric and to develop their own rhetorical skills. At the end of this CU students should be able to:
i) be acquainted with classical rhetoric and its techniques;
ii) analyze and understand the rhetoric of new media;
iii) acquire rhetorical skills in the many facets of public discourse.
Syllabus
1 - The historical development of rhetoric
i) Democracy and the origins of Greek rhetoric. Rhetoric and citizenship.
ii) The aristotelian systematization of rhetorics. The different types of rhetoric and their techniques.
2 - The rhetoric in the media and the rhetoric of images.
i) rhetoric, propaganda, advertising and marketing.
ii) The excess of information and the economy of attention.
iii) The power of words and the power of images. The mediated rhetoric and computer-assisted rhetoric .
