Learning outcomes Aspects of forensic medicine relevant to medical practice: identification and orientation of the various types of violence and deception and of simulation situations and abuse, identification, collection and preservation of traces with judicial Interest scope and limitations of forensic expertise. At the end of the CU students should be able to: • describe the medico-legal and forensic organization of Portugal; • describe the types of medical-legal and forensic examinations and expertise, its purpose, scope and limitations; • describe the pathophysiological processes of death, the postmortem changes and procedures for the verification and certification of death; • identify and know the situations corresponding to direct violence and abuses which are public crimes; • know how to identify, collect and preserve traces with forensic relevance.
Syllabus 1 - Medicolegal autopsies: Legal, normative and objectives of medico-legal autopsy. Autopsy technique. Scope and limitations of forensic autopsies. 2 - Types of injuries and their pathophysiology, defense injuries and self-inflicted injuries. 3 - Examinations and medico-legal and forensic skills; in the evaluation of body damage in civil law, labor law and criminal law; • in sexual assault situations; • under some particular situations domestic violence (abuse of minors, women and the elderly), addiction status evaluation, etc ,; • within the forensic anthropology; • tests and skills in the context of genetics and forensic biology: the kinship investigations, the skills of forensic criminology and individual genetic identification; • 4 - Medical-legal organization of the country; • tests and expertise of forensic toxicology: general aspects, alcohol and drugs and abuse; • 5 - pathophysiology of death and certification of death.
