Learning outcomes 1- The aim of environmental biotechnology is to teach students to monitor the environmental pollution. As main goals are pointed out the following: 1 - To identify monitoring parameters used in water and wastewater characterization
2 - To describe the main technologies applied in effluent treatment

Before the completion of this course students should be able to understand the fundamentals of biological, chemical and physical aspects applied on monitoring and treatment of water, wastewater and solid waste. Specifically they should describe the biological principles of wastewater treatment processes and solve problems related with monitoring and treatment processes.
Syllabus Theoretical Subjects:
The relationship between the natural water cycle and human water use. Pollutants in water, soil and air. Water Biogeochemical cycle. Monitoring water and wastewater effluents. Effluent characterization. Physical/chemical/biological treatment unit processes. Physical units: grit chambers, equalization basins, primary sedimentation tanks and dissolved air flotation.
Chemical units: coagulation/flocculation. Biological methods to treat liquid effluents: aerobic and anaerobic systems. Polishing technologies: bio-sorption, disinfection and membranes technologies. Recycling and saving resources. Solid wastes. Bio-treatment of solid wastes: energetic and organic valorization. Atmospheric pollution: monitoring and preventing. Bioremoval of gaseous contaminants.

Practical:
Monitoring water lines: solids quantification, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Ammonium and Kjeldahl Nitrogen, total phosphorus. Aerobic respirometric biodegradation test.
