Learning outcomes Analyze Portuguese literature from contemporary period.
By the end of the semester, the student must be able to:
- develop critical thinking in relation to literary phenomenon;
- consolidate the terminology of versification, narratology and rhetorics;
- understand literary trends from the Second Portuguese Modernism to the present day;
- recognize the main writers and poets of those trends;
- increase the capacity and critical analysis of poetry and prose;
- increase the study of literary idiosyncrasies of the greatest contemporary Portuguese writers.

1.1. The short-story: structures.
1.2. «Novos Contos da Montanha».
2. The movements of Portuguese neo-realism and surrealism;
2.1. Periodization, aesthetic and ideological features and most representative authors of Portuguese neo-realism and surrealism;
2.2. «A Lã e a Neve», of Ferreira de Castro.
2.3. «Os Passos em Volta», of Herberto Helder.
3. Poetic generations coeval and ulterior of the «Cadernos de Poesia»: the experimental poetry and the overcoming of isms. Leading figures of contemporary poetry. The difficulty in establishing a canon of contemporary;
3.1. Poetry of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen;
4. New ways of Portuguese fiction novel from the second half of the XX century.
4.1. Trends and most representative authors of the Portuguese novel.
4.2. The novel-problem of Vergílio Ferreira: «Em Nome da Terra»
4.3. The postmodern historiographic metafiction: "Um deus passeando pela brisa da tarde", by Mário de Carvalho.

All the other references are recommended along the semester.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The classes are theoretical-practical. The theoretical part is evaluated by two tests (8 values each). The practical component related to the readings of literary works, their interpretation and discussion in classes and this participation of students is valued for 2 values. There is also the presentation of an oral work consisting in the apreciation of a page of a literary portuguese contemporary work not included in the syllabus. The calendar of these evaluations is negociated with students in the first session. Minimum mark to access exam: 6 values.
