Learning outcomes To allow students to acquire and manage a set of necessary basic tools for learning different subjects throughout the medical course. At the end of this unit students should be able to: - find relevant and updated scientific information in the biomedical field and communicate scientific data effectively - relate the principles of physics to the functioning of the human body, identify and understand the more relevant technologies to medicine, namely in medical image - use basic concepts and terminology related to the functioning of the human body - interpret the functioning and organization of the healthcare system in Portugal - identify the role of different professionals involved in healthcare institutions - work in teams and communicate with colleagues and health professionals - identify attitudes and values of the medical profession. - use computer applications that allow access to relevant medical information
Syllabus 1. Concepts of Anatomy and Physiology, anatomical descriptions, plans, regions, anatomical and clinical positions. Concept of homeostasis, examples. 2. Medical terminology 3. Physical principles applied to biology and medicine (electricity, fluids, sound, light and modern physics). Relevant technologies in medicine 4. Scientific method. Scientific information: search, organization and dissemination. 5. Health System, health policy and national health plans. Health system organization in Portugal and human resources. Effectiveness, efficiency and quality. 6. Medical professionalism. 7. Medical Informatics
