Learning outcomes Identify the properties of materials, their processing and typical applications.
Describe the basic concepts of material selection and the most appropriate processing method.
Develop eco-selection, understand energy concerns and reuse. Promote the application of eco-selection knowledge, the ability to interpret and understand, to solve problems and design products, equipment and systems.

3. High performance polymeric materials.
4. Advanced ceramic materials. Thermal barrier coatings.
5. Composite materials. Functional gradient materials. Multifunctional materials.
6. Ruin mechanisms in materials. Fatigue, creep, wear and corrosion.
7. Material selection.
7.1 Selection strategies and project requirements.
7.2 Properties of materials. Mechanical, thermal, electrical and sensory properties.
7.3 Selection of processes.
7.4 Materials and the environment. Life cycle of a material.
