A study developed at the University of Beira Interior (UBI) reveals that the consumption of cranberry has health benefits, especially for urinary tract problems. The most recent findings of the research were published in the Journal of Urology, considered the second best scientific journal of the field of Urology.

The article, published this month, points out that the consumption of cranberries reduces the incidence of urinary infections, especially in patients with recurrent urinary infections. This can be very relevant in the treatment and prevention of these problems and consequently in the prevention of the development of antibiotic resistance.

In the future, the beneficial effects of red fruit consumption on human health will be evaluated, particularly in the control of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. It also intends to study the chemical interactions between the majority bioactive compounds of the red fruits and the resulting effect on the antioxidant activity; another intention is to perform the phytochemical characterization and to evaluate the rheological and antioxidant properties of commercially available red fruit juices.

The article entitled "Can Cranberries Contribute to Reduce the Incidence of Urinary Tract Infections? The Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis and Trial Sequential Analysis of Clinical Trials "is signed by a team of three UBI researchers - Ângelo Luís (Post-Doctorate Fellow of the Faculty of Sciences under the Protocol concluded between UBI and the Bank Santander / Totta, Fernanda Domingues (from the Center for Research in Health Sciences) and Luísa Pereira (Center for Mathematics and Applications).

According to Luísa Pereira, the publication of the work "will surely contribute to a greater visibility and recognition by the scientific community of the interdisciplinary work developed in the Faculty of Sciences and UBI".
