Research Interests
The main research activities are related with the development of new biotechnological platforms to obtain biopharmaceuticals (mainly plasmid DNA, minicircle DNA and RNA) with potential therapeutic applications. In particular, the biosynthesis of recombinant biomolecules has been studied using different prokaryotic hosts, and the purification of plasmid DNA and RNA is being largely investigated through the design and development of specific technologies. In this field, the main goal is the development of efficient purification strategies that comply with the current good manufacturing practices, to obtain biopharmaceuticals. The biomolecular interactions and mechanisms involved in nucleic acids biorecognition is also under investigation. Considering an integrated platform, the research projects also focus on the formulation of the bioproducts enabling the stabilization, protection and delivery of gene-based products or RNA to cellular models, to evaluate their biological activity. The main therapeutic areas addressed in these studies have been cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, through the evaluation of gene therapy (using pDNA or mcDNA) or gene silencing (miRNA) approaches.
