Learning outcomes Understanding of the main concepts related to biometric systems. Identification of the several phases associated to the biometric recognition process: detection of the region of interest, data segmentation, normalization, codification and matching. Classification of a biometric system according to different performance measures.
Ability to identify requisites, plan and implement a biometric system: selection of the biometric trait to be used, planning of the data acquisition framework and protocol. Identification of data variation factors. definition of methods for noise handling. Implementation and optimization of biometric systems.
Syllabus Introduction to biometrics. Biometric traits: comparison according to different perspectives. A biometric system as a pattern recognition application: data acquisition, segmentation and data normalization. feature extraction and matching. Histograms of genuine and impostors comparisons (variability). performance measures of biometric systems (ROC, DET, EER, FRR|FAR=0). Fusion of biometric systems. Fusion at different levels.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods Classes are predominantly expositive, divided into the presentations given by teacher and presentations given by students about different subjects related to biometric systems. After the presentations, discussion and criticism about the transmitted subjects will be important, considering the level of scientific maturity desirable for a course of the 3rd cycle.
Metodologias de Ensino e Critérios de Avaliação Os alunos deverão propôr um tema relaccionado com a sua área de interesse que tenha algum ponto de contacto com a temática dos sistemas biométricos. Para o tema proposto, deverão estudar os trabalhos de âmbito científicos publicados na área, bem como eventuais sistemas em funcionamento.

Quinzenalmente, apresentarão e discutirão perante a turma a evolução do seu estudo.
No final, a avaliação incidirá sobre a qualidade do relatório produzido (70%) e das apresentações realizadas perante a turma(30%).
