Learning outcomes 1. Read literary texts in a critical and focused manner;
2. Be able to rewrite;
3. Domain and self-control in written expression;
4. Critical capability not only towards the production of others, but also regarding the student’s own creative production. At the end of the semester, the student should be able to demonstrate creative skills through stimuli departing from several artistic domains; know how to apply creative tools/techniques, producing several types of texts; reveal competences regarding written production, being able to write texts correcting the morphosintactic and logical-semantic point-of-view; produce useful, literary and advertising texts; use the Portuguese language clearly and correctly, under different circumstances; know how to evaluate critically not only the production of others, but also his/her own.
Syllabus 1. Imitation and representation; mimesis and catharsis; the “Law of three units”; literary and advertising language.
2. Convergence between individual style and system culturally shared. Living, death and steady metaphors. Commonplace. Exercises of style.
3. Fiction: what is left?
3.1 Description and perception. Point of view. Details. Static and ‘cinematographic’ description. Character description. Direct and indirect characterization.
3.2 Categories of narrative. Action and intrigue. The construction of space(s). The treatment of time in speech. Deferment, distention and contention.
3.3 Narration and focalization. The narrator’s choices. Direct, indirect and free indirect speech. Dialogue as speech to be read.
3.4 The beginning, the finale and the middle: the elephant’s theory.
3.5 Dramatic tension. Commonplaces and caricatures. The creation of expectation and the manipulation of the reader. Inevitable sources: the Bible; Classic Mythology; Popular tales.
