Learning outcomes It is intended with this discipline to provide the student with knowledge about the historical antecedents that were the basis of the appearance and evolution of Design in Portugal,and international context, acquiring bases for an essential visual culture in project practice. The comprehensive study of architecture, interiors, furniture, artifacts, tiles, fabrics, and clothes produced from its origins to the present day, may lead to a deeper knowledge of the factors and indications that have provided turning moments throughout history, in an anthropological perspective integrating the various branches, from the points of view of their formal, hierarchical and symbolic relations.
Syllabus Early civilizations: Primitive art, Ancient Egypt, Crete, Greece, Etruscans and Rome. From Romanesque to Late Gothic. Influences of Mudejar Art and the East. The Manuelino Style. Renaissance, Maneirismo and Jesuit Baroque. Spanish-influenced costumes. Louis XIII styles to Louis XIV and the triumph of French fashion. Indo-Portuguese and Barroco Joanino. Queen Anne and Georgian styles in the English context, Louis XV in France. Rocaille. The creation of national manufactures. The dissemination of publications dedicated to fashion. Neoclassicism in the reigns of D. Maria and Louis XVI. Styles Directory and Empire. Eclecticism and revivalism. The birth of Haute Couture. New currents: Aesthetic Movement, Arts and Crafts, Art Nova and Secession. The search for a national style. Art Deco, De Stijl and Constructivism. Portugal seen through national and international exhibition. Bauhaus. Consumption in the post-war period. The modern movement.
