Learning outcomes This curricular unit aims to promote refection about the ethical questions regarding the journalistic practice and raise awareness to the importance of professional ethics by emphasising the role of journalism in the general and ethic-moral formation of individuals.

At the end of the unit students should be able to (i) explain the role and value of the professional ethics; (ii) state the main contents of journalistic deontology; (iii) discuss the purposes and implications of the journalists’ deontological code; (iv) evaluate the journalistic practice in the light of ethical principles and deontological norms.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Theoretical-practical classes, with expository, dialogical, text analysis and case study moments.

a) A group text analysis work. It will have an oral presentation and discussion (20%);
b) An individual work of i) ethical analysis of a journalistic work (television, printed, radio or digital) that violates norms of the Portuguese journalists' code of ethics and ii) reformulation of the news (50%);
c) A group work on the proposal to revise the code of ethics (30%).
