Learning outcomes This course has the general and main objective of providing students with theoretical knowledge about the intersection of Anthropology and Culture. Its specific objectives are:
- To study, interpret and discuss texts on anthropology and culture;
- To analyse culture as a symbolic system based on the "anthropos" as a symbolic animal.
- To study the anthropological approach to the categories of time, place, identity and hybridity in contemporary society
At the end of the course unit, the student should be able to:
1. Identify and describe the main problems dealt with by symbolic, interpretative and cultural anthropology;
2. Familiarise themselves with the different anthropological approaches to identity and cultural relativism;
3. Problematise cultural issues based on analysing and understanding fundamental texts.
4. Develop self-reflexive and argumentative skills.
Syllabus 1. Symbolic, interpretative and cultural anthropology.
2. Man as an animal symbolicum and culture as a system of symbols.
3. Identity and cultural relativism: thinking about the difference across cultures and the cultural difference.
4. The crisis of modernity and the proliferation of hybrids
5. Imaginary and forgetting, overmodernity and non-places.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Theoretical/practical classes using multimedia to present the contents of the course. A pedagogical-didactic methodology of initial presentation of the topics will be adopted, followed by commented reading of fundamental texts previously made available on the UC Moodle and critical discussion in class. This methodology aims to clarify and consolidate the learning of concepts.
The assessment of this course is based on two mandatory exercise tests (50%+50%) to be taken throughout the semester. Except for non-Portuguese-speaking Erasmus students, whose assessment will be based on two essays (50%+50%).
Students are exempt from the exam with a mark of 10 and are admitted to the exam with a mark of 6.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
