Prestressed Structures

Code 14543
Year 1
Semester S1
ECTS Credits 6
Workload OT(15H)
Scientific area Engenharia Civil
Entry requirements Good base knowledge on “Strength of Materials”, “Structural Analysis” and “Structural Concrete”
Learning outcomes The pedagogical objectives of the course are defined in terms of skills to be acquired by students, prioritized into three levels, in order of decreasing depth and relative semester workload:
Proficiency of
a) Design of statically determinate and indeterminate prestressed structures;
b) Supervision of the construction of prestressed elements and structures.
Understanding of:
a) Fundamental principles of prestressing;
b) Materials, methods and techniques for prestressing and complementary operations.
Recognition of:
a) Special requirements for the demolition of prestressed structures;
b) Rehabilitation solutions for prestressed structures.
Syllabus 1. Introduction. Prestressing methods and techniques.
2. Fundamental concepts. Comparisons between prestressed and reinforced concrete. Material properties. Section analysis.
3. Prestress losses. Instant losses and deferred losses.
4. Design of statically determinate prestressed concrete beams. Service limit states. Limit stress equations. Magnel diagram. Limit zone.
5. Stability check. Ultimate limit states of resistance in bending and shear.
6. Anchorage zones. Action of localized forces. Safety check and construction provisions.
7. Statically indeterminate structures. Primary and secondary bending moments. Linear transformation and concordance. Equivalent loads method. Service behaviour and ultimate resistance. Redistribution of internal forces.
