Learning outcomes To stimulate the exercise of critical analysis on the constructive, conceptual and expressive values of architecture;
To build a critical, sustained and coherent argument regarding the relationship between contemporary architectural construction and expression;
To promote research ‘by’ and ‘for’ the design as a generator of relevant questions/problems;
To develop skills to analise the role of construction on the articulation between design and research.
Syllabus 1. General concepts and theoretical perspectives regarding the development of the themes;
2. Expressive value of building construction in architecture;
3. Contemporary architectural construction and architectonic expression;
4 Research ‘by’ and ‘for’ Design as a generator of relevant questions/problems for the knowledge and practice in architecture;
5. Photography as an instrument to analyse and inquire architecture, city and territory.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Beginning with a theoretical lecture presenting and discussing the subject’s themes;
Five theoretical-practical lectures and seminars lectured by invited researchers approaching different perspectives on subject’s themes;
Orientation-Tutorial classes to develop and guide a theoretical-practical assessment (written and drawn) with a critical perspective.
The subject does not require evaluation by Exam and will have the following evaluation regime:
a) Participation in class debates (20%)
b) Carrying out an obkigatory theoretical-practical work (80%).
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
