Architecture with Special Cases of Structural Design

Code 15216
Year 5
Semester S1
ECTS Credits 5
Workload T(15H)/TP(30H)
Scientific area Arquitetura
Entry requirements NA
Learning outcomes The goals of the Curricular Unit correspond to the acquisition of knowledge and skills for the critical analysis of
constructions in which the options of structural design were relevant and are related with the shape, the dimensions or the proportions. Additionally, it is a goal the knowledge and skills for the analysis of cases in which diferente conditionings, like the availability of resources, the technical and scientific development and the social and economic environment were determinant for those options. The competencies to develop will permit to identify special cases of structural design and their use as eventual references for new constructions.
Syllabus 1 – Stone structures: i) Conditionings of the material and available construction means; ii) The shape and the
equilibrium; iii) Special cases. 2 – Structural design and constructions of Eladio Dieste: i) Reinforced masonry; ii) Study of the structural shapes; iii) Analysis of the constructive processes. 3 - Shell structures of Félix Candela: i) Influences in the development of principles and concepts; ii) The hyperbolic paraboloid shape; iii) Analysis of the constructive processes; 4 – Tall buildings: i) Analysis of conditioning aspects; ii) Possibilities of structural design; iii) Efficient using of high strength materials; iii) Special cases. 5 – Light-weight suspended structures: i) Introduction and description of the structural behavior; ii) Form-finding; iii) Materials and constructive processes; iv) Special cases. 5 – Examples of long span structures.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The syllabus is presented in a theoretical component focused on special cases of structural design. The theoretic-practical component is focused on the detailed analysis of selected cases, based on different tools like bibliographic search, physical and digital modelling, and others, aiming to identify and to analyze the relevant aspects. The evaluation methodology is composed of a written test for evaluation of the theoretical component and individual presentation of a study about a selected construction or work of a “structural artist".
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
