Entry requirements In the case of the Drawing I course in the Integrated Master's in Architecture, there is no need for specific prerequisites.
Learning outcomes The subject of Drawing I/1 aims to develop the ability to observe and the skill (knowledge) of the act of drawing as representation, as well as to enhance and develop the sensitivity and imagination of the students for the artistic, icono-plastic, and iconic values of drawing.
The development of the ability to observe involves the simultaneous understanding of the responsible perceptual systems, as well as the systems for formalizing drawing as privileged means of knowledge and understanding.
It is important to recognize drawing as a graphic expression of an intention that should seek its basis in the assimilation and accommodation of knowledge. Knowledge that will thus be transformed into individual and subjective tacit knowledge, both about the heritage of Drawing and Architecture and about the means of expression. Drawing is learned by drawing, but primarily by reflecting on its practice.
Syllabus The specific programmatic content will be incorporated into the exercises and addressed in a holistic rather than analytical manner. However, there is an intentional thread that we should clarify.
The entire development of understanding (read: sensitization) follows a path that generally starts with a "mark" or "stain," which is the first element of perceptual organization in a human being. All perception is an active process that organizes sensory stimuli into a coherent whole. The visual and somatic neuro-perceptual features— the boundaries of the real; visual perception; the somatosensory system and the perception of the body; action in the construction of space and its representation—lead us to the idea that the organism (body and mind) is an intentional entity.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The course will involve the development of a set of practical exercises, designed and supervised in class and, if necessary, through telepresence systems. Theoretical support will be provided in accordance with the current exercise.
Exercises will be introduced through a specific statement, describing the objectives, the materials to be used, the format to be presented, and the duration of the exercise.
The exercises will be tailored to the objectives of the course and will consist of 8 main exercises (each lasting 1 to 2 weeks), with additional room for quick, parallel exercises or sketchbook analysis that enable better understanding of the objectives.
The assignments will be presented and discussed in the classroom. There will be three assessment moments where the respective exercises will be presented in an A2-format portfolio and in digital format (PPT or PDF).
Assessment is continuous and may occur either in-person or remotely through computer systems. There is no final exam.

Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
