Learning outcomes At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
1) Understand the main concepts associated with the functionalization of textile substrates.
2) Screening amidst the available functionalization techniques and processes the one that best adapts to the desired product;
3) Select and apply functionalization technologies upon different substrates, depending on the desired properties; 4) Consider and carry out the necessary quality control operations to ensure the performance of the functionalized product.
5) Develop, for each functionalized product, an assessment of the cost/benefit ratio;
6) Promote, within the company, the development of innovative products with improved properties.
Syllabus 1) Definitions and terminology in the functionalization of textile materials;
2) Actuation mechanisms in functional textile;
3) Construction techniques and development of functional textiles;
4) Application fields for functional textiles;

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Presentation, through face-to-face sessions and with the participation of students, of the theoretical and practical contents related to the concepts and techniques described in the syllabus.
Applied technical study of various functionalization technologies. Applied examples, developed by students, in cooperative learning, based on real situations in the textile and apparel industry.
Practical exercises for evaluating the performance of functionalized products using different techniques. Individual and group practical exercises.
Conducting successful case research in the industry and/or industry market.
Autonomous study and preparation of deliverables: report and project of a functionalized product.
The classification of the UC is obtained by a theoretical work and by a practical project. Final grade is given through the formula:
FINAL NOTE = 0.5 x T + 0.5 x P.

Subtitle:
T = Theoretical component grade
P = Practical component grade
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
