Semester S2
ECTS Credits 6
Workload T(30H)/TP(30H)
Scientific area Biotecnologia

Learning outcomes The goals of this course are to provide students with a set of interdisciplinary knowledge in areas such as biorefinery; biomass; biofuels and industrial biotechnology in sectors of pulp and paper and textile industry.
Production and characterization of biomaterials for biomedical applications.
At the end of the course students should be able to understand the application of biological processes in conventional industrial technologies; understand the controlled use of microbial systems to convert biomass, to describe the different types of microorganisms that interact with the wood and its constituents, to know these (being implemented) and future (in development) applications of enzymes in processes and textile materials and in paper industry; know and compare the main applications (present and future) of biomaterials based in fibers and textiles polymers, developing the ability to use knowledge as a tool of interpretation and intervention in specific situations.
Syllabus Biomass, biofuels and biorefinery: chemical composition, conversion processes; application and integration of chemical and biotechnological processes in the development of biofuels (enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation in ethanol).
Biotechnology in pulp and paper industry: microorganisms and enzymes involved in degradation of plant cell walls; modification of fibers; biopulping, biobleaching; pitch and slime control in the processes. Practice: enzymes application to improve refining of a kraft bleached eucalyptus pulp.
Biotechnology in the Textile Industry: Sustainability in Textiles. Characterization of textile fibers and polymers.Enzyme application in the textile industry: design of new processes and biocatalysis in textile fibers.
Biopolymers and sustainable materials: from protein fibers, cellulosic derivatives and artificial polymers. Recycling and reuse.
Nanofibers biosynthesis and electrospinning. Bioactive functionalization, biomimetic strategies. Applications.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Teaching-learning classification
Final note: 65 % module 1 + 35 % module 2

Assessment regarding Module 1
70% T (average of the two frequencies) + 30% P (average of practical work and presentation of a scientific article.)

Assessment regarding Module 2
70% T (overall attendance) + 30% P ( average of practical work and presentation of a scientific article).

Approval condition: each theoretical component of the modules must have a classification equal to or greater than 9.50.

Practical part: carrying out the laboratory work according to the criteria for frequency and analysis/discussion of scientific articles on topics related to the contents (both modules).

EXAME: Students who cannot obtain a classification of 9.50 values for frequency, who have received at least 9.50 values in the practical component, can take the exam.

Exam classification: 50% module 1 + 50% module 2
