Entry requirements -
Learning outcomes Know the main activities of Industrial Chemistry professionals; elucidate students about the activities of the profession and the contribution of an Industrial Chemist in responding to the challenges of society in different areas.
Complement and encourage the integration of knowledge acquired by students in previous curricular units through field trips to companies/industrial units.
Acquire basic knowledge about the problem of industrial production of chemical compounds, including the different industrial chemical processes, their control and optimization.
Syllabus The role of the industrial chemist: where can the industrial chemist intervene in the chemical industry?
Fundamental chemical industries. Industrial chemical processes. Raw material. Energy resources. Environmental impact
Analytical procedures used in the control of production processes and product quality.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Seminars/lectures (in person or online) on topics and career prospects in Industrial Chemistry, preferably with the participation of Alumnis.
Field trips to industrial companies so that students can get in touch with real industrial control processes, equipment and instruments, and, also, with the real use of control methodologies in the Portuguese chemical industries.
SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) of the visited industries, in relation to the processes developed, the environmental impact and sustainability of the cycles of use of raw materials, water and energy, establishing and describing the opportunities for reuse, reduction and recirculation.

The assessment will consist of 2 parts:
1 - Brief summary of 2 of the seminars/lectures, where the main role of the industrial chemist should be highlighted (20%)
2 - Preparation of SWOT analysis (in groups of 2 students) - 80%
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
