Learning outcomes This course unit gives to the students an overview about the structure, function, properties and production of materials used in the manufacture of medical devices used in regenerative medicine. At the end of this course unit students must be able to: ­ Be aware of the importance of developing new biomaterials to be used in regenerative medicine. ­ Understand the importance of fully characterize biomaterials for biomedical applications. ­ Know the different stages of biomaterials certification, until they can be used in the clinical environment. ­ Use basic laboratory equipment. ­ Read and understand scientific documents. ­ Recognize their limitations and be aware of the importance of keeping their skills update, paying special attention
Syllabus 1. Materials and civilization. Materials Classification. State of art of biomaterials and future trends. 2. Materials properties. Characterization assays. 3. Different types of biomaterials: Structure, properties and application examples. 4. Principles of selection of biomaterials. Selection strategies. Lifecycle, re­usability, recyclability and recoverability. 5. Principles of biomaterials selection for their use in biological systems. 6. Different applications of biomaterials in Biology, Biochemistry and Medicine. 7. Relationship between chemical and physical properties of biomaterials and their interactions with biological systems. 8. Tissue Engineering. Practical program of of the course unit ­ Atomic Organization of materials ­ Different properties of biomaterials. ­ Examples of metal alloys used as biomaterials. ­ Polymers used as biomaterials. ­ Composite materials used as biomaterials. . Characterization of the cytotoxic profile of biomaterials
