Learning outcomes At the end of the Curricular Unit, the student must:
a) acquire basic knowledge about the historical and aesthetic evolution of cinema in Portugal, namely the main movements, authors, aesthetics and technologies;
b) articulate, in a well-founded and critical way, cinematographic production with contextual and structural elements of the political, economic, social and cultural history in Portugal.

1) The first years of cinema in Portugal: the first sessions and the importance of Aurélio da Paz dos Reis
2) The 1920s and the influence of European avant-gardes: Rino Lupo, Roger Lion, Georges Pallu and Maurice Mariaud

1) Leitão de Barros: the transition from silent to sound cinema
2) António Lopes Ribeiro: the official filmmaker of Salazarism
3) António Ferro and the debate surrounding Portuguese comedy
