Environmental Modelling in Gis

Code 16657
Year 1
Semester S2
ECTS Credits 6
Workload OT(6H)/T(4H)/TP(20H)
Scientific area Environmental Sciences
Entry requirements Good knowledge and command of GIS tools.
Learning outcomes Objectives: to analyze the main environmental impacts associated with engineering works and the effect of policies, plans and programs on the environment and propose measures to minimize negative effects on the environment using geographic information systems (GIS) tools.

Skills:
a) Recognition of the environmental consequences arising from the construction, operation and deactivation of engineering works;
b) Understanding the different stages of the environmental impact assessment (AIA) process and the application of strategic environmental assessment (AAE);
c) Understanding the potential of GIS tools for the assessment of environmental impacts, environmental monitoring and strategic environmental assessment.
Syllabus Chapter 1. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY 1.1. Environmental problems arising from the implementation of engineering works. 1.2. Environmental sustainability indicators. 1.3 Use of GIS in environmental management. Chapter 2. ASSESSMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS 2.1. The environmental impact assessment process. 2.2. Phases of environmental impact assessment. 2.3. Application of GIS in the identification, assessment, minimization and monitoring of environmental impacts. Chapter 3. APPLICATION OF GIS IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS 3.1. Acquisition and structuring of environmental data in GIS. 3.2. Spatial analyzes for environmental problems. 3.3. Visualization and communication of environmental results.
Main Bibliography Bibliographic material provided by teachers.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The UC is taught during the 2nd semester, as an optional subject, involving 30 hours of contact with the teacher and 180 hours of autonomous student work (total: 210 hours). Approval for the UC gives 6 ECTS. Classes are theoretical (T, 4h), where the theoretical contents of the three chapters are presented, theoretical-practical (TP, 20h), where an individual work is developed on the application of GIS for the assessment of environmental impacts, environmental monitoring and strategic environmental assessment, and tutorial (OT, 6h), where questions on the work are explained. The evaluation is carried out through the classification of the individual work (85%) and presentation (15%).
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
