Learning outcomes |
Introduce students to thinking and culture of the Middle Ages, so they know the determinant factors, sources, themes (God, soul, world, logic, faith, reason ...), currents, authors and texts fundamental in the Middle Ages.
At the end of the course the student should be able to: 1. locate the authors studied the space, time and historical context; 2. analyze an excerpt from a work of each author studied, and elaborate on it a little text 3. demonstrate writing ability to define concepts and terms such as "mediaevum" "aeternitas", "persona","translatio studiorum", "fides quae / fides qua","fides quaerens intellectum", "ontological argument","quinquae viae"... 4. Argue the term "Middle Ages"; 5. Assess and denounce the negative prejudices that weigh on the 'Middle Ages'.

Syllabus |
INTRODUCTION. The notion of 'Middle Ages' in the context of a conventional periodization of the history of philosophy. Sources, currents and key moments of late-ancient and medieval tought.
1. "Translatio studiorum" (sécs. V-IX). General introduction to the problem of maintenance and transmission of knowledge ("trivium" and "quadrivium") in the high Middle Ages: translate, comment, reconcile, transmit. Introduction to the authors of this period, especially Boethius (+-475/525)
2. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) and "fides quaerens intellectum."
3. Introduction to the notion 'falsafa' Arabic authors, themes and issues. The "Book of Decisive Discourse" of Averroes (1126-1198)
4. General Introduction to Philosophy in XII and XIII centuries. The 'Schools', the rediscovery of Aristotle. Bonaventure (1224?-1274), Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), Duns Scotus (1265-1308).
CONCLUDING REMARKS. Nominalism in the 14th century and the 'beginning of the end' of the Middle Ages.
