Learning outcomes This CU aims to provide a broad perspective on Art History, allowing the student not only to correctly identify movements, artists and works of art, but also to understand how they are interconnected, reflecting specific time-space contexts. At the end of the CU, the student should be able to identify and locate (both in time and space) Art History’s most relevant movements; characterize each period regarding its global context and realize the importance of that contextualization; relate correctly styles, artists and works; apply the acquired knowledge to the critical analysis of the construction of a cultural identity; work, both individually and in group, revealing a correct understanding of the defined parameters to each exercise; be successful in the written and oral presentation of the results of the elaborated research.
Syllabus 1. Visualization of Art History’s timeline.
2. The concept of ‘arbitrarity’ applied to art and its models through history.
3. From Paleolithic paintings to Neolithic architecture.
4. Antiquity:
4.1 Art in the Egyptian civilization;
4.2 The Greeks: configuration of the ‘Polis’ through architecture and sculpture;
4.3 The Romans: art as part of the Empire’s strategy of expansion.
5. The artistic output of Christianity’s first 200 years;
5.1 Paleochristian art;
5.2 Bizantine art: the iconoclastic question and Christian’s orthodoxy.
6. Medieval art: from Romanic to Gothic.
7. Classicism and Barroque: comparative analysis from H. Wölfflin.
8. XVIIIth Century: from ‘Rocaille’ to Neoclassicism.
9. XIXth Century: diversity and metamorphosis.
9.1 Art Nouveau and the iron’s architecture.
XIX/XXth Centuries: the work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction (W. Benjamin).
