Learning outcomes The aim is to systematize fundamental knowledge about the dynamics of demographic, social and territorial transformation, in particular: how populations grow and change; understand population movements in Portugal, Europe and the world; perceive the sociological consequences inherent in the different structures of the population; to social, demographic and territorial recompositions.

Intellectual skills:
Acquisition of knowledge and comprehension of the theoretical and methodological and technical concepts and perspectives of a sociological approach to the population and their movements and dynamics.
Practical skills:
Acquisition of skills in the application of knowledge and theories, in the area of study concerned; to demonstrate autonomous conduction of research capabilities within the scope of the subjects of the curricular unit.
Cross-cutting skills:
Acquisition of capacities to communicate the knowledge in a rigorous and meaningful way; including reflections on the ethical and social implications and responsibilities, in that field of work and research.
Demonstrate capacities for the conception, organization and execution of theoretical and empirical work and the autonomous management and development of learning activities; have sensitivity and ability in the field of technical and scientific interdisciplinarity.

Syllabus I - Demography and Sociology of Population: from concepts to theories; delimit the object of study; interpret demographic indicators on the structure and movement of the population.
II - Transition and demographic analysis: The demographic transition in Europe, North America and developing countries; demographic structures at each stage of transition; transformations in behavior and ways of life; demographic transition limits.
III - Population and globalization: generalization of the demographic transition? global sustainability; growing cities; international migration; refugees; impacts of climate change.
IV - Social, demographic and territorial recompositions: the demographic changes that accompany urban and rural mutations and local and global policies and challenges.
