Learning outcomes - Develop reflective knowledge about the meaning and influence of Portuguese expansion in the world. - Re-examine "myths" reated to Portuguese expansionism. - Having an overview of the world before the 15th century expansion. - Expose, in a contextual and comparative perspective, the general frameworks of Portuguese expansion in the 15th and 16th centuries. - Know the life of some of the main builders of the Empire. - Understand the process of formation of the Empire. - Evaluate the model of the Portuguese Empire. - Clarify the place that the Portuguese Empire occupies among the empires. - Capture the nature of contacts established between peoples and civilizations. - Explain the spread of the Portuguese language. - Clarify the relationship between literature and the Empire. - Boost academic debate. - Mastering operating concepts and sharpening cognitive skills. - Encourage autonomous learning strategies. - Produce scientific texts.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Expositive classes; discussion classes; practical work; use of audiovisual resources; use of the Moodle platform.

Written work – scientific article format – (85%) + presentation (10%) = 95%.
Class participation = 5%.
Possibility for the student to take the exam provided that he has obtained a minimum grade of 6 in teaching and learning, the exam consisting of the re-elaboration of the written work.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
