Learning outcomes Prepare students for the design and processing aspects of the construction and maintenance of roads, in particular the ones related to earthworks, pavement mechanics, paving technology and principles of management of the road pavement maintenance. It also aims to introduce aspects of the project of railways.
The following competencies are transmitted to students:
(a) Ability to understand the execution of road earthworks.
(b) Ability to perform expedited design of flexible, rigid and semi-rigid road pavements and to understand analytical design of flexible road pavements.
(c) Ability to understand road pavements maintenance management systems.
(d) Recognition of the geometric and pavement design aspects of railways.
Syllabus 1. Road earthworks: types of soil; characterization tests and classifications of soils, compaction, consolidation and strength of soils; road earthworks, pavement foundation; specifications and recommendations.
2. Road pavements: general design; types and composition; paving materials; mixtures for road pavement layers; design method for hot asphalt mixtures; cold asphalt mixtures; surface treatments; concrete cement; paving technology; pavement design.
3. Principles of road pavements maintenance management: pathologies; pavement observation; principles of road management; structure of a pavement management system; database; assessment of pavements quality and pavement maintenance program.
4. Railways: introduction, general geometry and pavements.
