Learning outcomes To understand fundamental concepts of physical, MAC and link layer protocols, naming and addressing, routing protocols, transport layer and quality of service (QoS) in wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs).
To know how to analyse the problem of the coverage of a vast zone by a WSAN. To analyse the dynamic voltage scaling and the power consumption versus lifetime for the WSN nodes. To know how to determine the impact of the signal-to-noise ratio in the bit error rate. To interpret the characteristics of the medium access and control (MAC) protocols whilst identifying energy efficient MAC procedures. To know how to apply error detection and correction codes. To apply concepts of naming and addressing in WSANs, distinguishing content and geographic based routing. To analyse the most common routing protocols applied in WSNs.
Syllabus 1 - Introduction. Wireless sensor networks, wireless fieldbuses and ad-hoc networks.
2 - Single node architecture.
3 - Network architecture.
4 - Communication protocols: physical layer, MAC protocols and link layer protocols.
5 - Naming and addressing.
6 - Routing protocols.
7 - Data-centric and content-based networking.
8 - Transport layer and quality of service (QoS).
9 - Advanced application support.
10 - WiFi, WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) and IEEE 802.15.4.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria In laboratory work, seminars and homework assignments, there is interaction with the class in order to incorporate self-assessment components and to correct small deficiencies in the educational path of the student that can be identified.
