Learning outcomes:
The curricular unit of Construction Materials I aims to provide appropriate training in the science of building materials, its structure, properties, processing conditions and performance. The following skills will be developed:
a) Mastery of selecting and application of different materials based on technical criteria for different conditions of use and performance in general;
b) Mastery of the properties of construction materials;
c) Understanding the types of building materials available and the properties they must possess to different applications;
d) Understanding the need to use durable materials with better functional and environmental performance and for recycling and reuse of materials in its end of lifecycle;
e) Recognition of different types of construction materials used in construction and requirements for its use.
Syllabus:
1. Main properties of materials; European directive.
2. Products from natural stone; testing physical, mechanical properties of and their applications.
3. Ceramics and glass, the chemical composition of traditional ceramics, processing and testing of ceramic materials, structure and composition of glass used in construction.
4. Alloys and steel for construction, production and characteristics, corrosion and electroplating; Main types of steel used in construction,
5. Timber and related products; Chemical composition and physical properties of wood; Cork, its structure and composition and its applications.
6. Polymers, materials for insulation, waterproofing and paints; materials for thermal and acoustic insulation; Water sealing materials; Paints and varnishes; Asphalt and bituminous membranes; PVC membranes and flooring melamine.
7. Introduction to composite materials and binders: Air and hydraulic lime; Cements, mortars and hydraulic; Asphalt emulsion and bitumen.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria:
The evaluation is performed with an individual written test (50%) covering theoretical and practical issues, developing a portfolio of individual problem (10%) solving, an experimental laboratory work (20%) and a work project (20%) in group, with presentation and discussion, which consists of a practical case study of choice and application of materials, based on technical criteria.
