Learning outcomes:
The Hydraulics II course unit aims to consolidate and deepen the knowledge acquired in Hydraulics I, focusing on the study of free-surface flows, orifices and spillways, flow through porous media, and hydraulic turbomachinery. The course intends to develop specific competencies enabling students to: (a) analyse and compute flows in fixed-bed channels and hydraulic jumps; (b) determine discharge capacity in orifices and spillways; (c) assess the behaviour of flows in homogeneous porous media; and (d) understand the operation and selection of hydraulic pumps and turbines. The teaching methodology, based on theoretical–practical classes, laboratory work and independent study, ensures the integration of theory, experimentation and practical application, promoting critical thinking, autonomy, and collaborative work.
Syllabus:
Chapter 1. Open-channel flows: Uniform regime; Bernoulli’s theorem and specific energy; Types of flow; Total momentum; Froude number and flow control; Free surface profiles for constant flow rate; Hydraulic jump; Free surface profiles for spatially varied flow; Rapidly varied steady flows.
Chapter 2. Flows through orifices and over weirs: Orifices in small thickness walls, in large thickness walls and submerged orifices; Sharp crested weir; Crest shape weir.
Chapter 3. Flows in porous media: Darcy’s law and permeability; Permeability determination; Darcy’s law validity; Application of Darcy’s law to homogeneous and isotropic media; Unidirectional and radial flows.
Chapter 4. Turbines and pumps: General description and installation conditions of turbines; Elementary theory of turbomachines; Similarity of turbomachines; Turbines functioning in steady conditions; Installation conditions of pumps; Pumps diagrams; Study of steady functioning based on characteristic curves; Choice of pumps.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria:
The assessment of the Hydraulics II course unit has been designed to ensure alignment with the learning objectives and to measure, in a balanced manner, the acquisition of theoretical, practical, and experimental knowledge. The assessment process combines formative and summative components, allowing students to demonstrate the required competencies progressively.
