Learning outcomes In this curricular unit it is intended that the student knows the possibilities and limitations of computer simulations in engineering design. At the end of this CU, the student should be able to perform the structural analysis of isolated 3D objects and functional assemblies of objects when subjected to mechanical and thermal loads, and be able to criticize the results of the simulations. The student must also select the type of elements to use, the average size of the finite element mesh and how to refine the mesh without making the model computationally heavy. To this end, it is intended that, in addition to practicing specific cases in TP classes, the student understands, in T classes, the theory of calculus that is behind FEM software.
Syllabus Finite element simulation phases (pre-processing, analysis and post-processing);
Matrix analysis with spring elements; Coordinate system; Equilibrium equations; Rigidity matrix assembly by superposition principle; Potential energy approach to derive the equations.
