Learning outcomes This Curricular Unit aims to provide students with knowledge in the fields of soil erosion in river basins and the hydraulics of flow with mobile beds, enabling them to the design of fluvial regulation and flood control structures and to the prediction of bed erosion and the application of countermeasures.
The following competencies will be developed in this curricular unit:
(a) Understanding of the characteristics of flows over mobile beds (transport of sediments and bedforms)
(b) Ability of the design of fluvial regulation and flood control structures
(c) Ability of the prediction of bed erosion and the application of erosion countermeasures
(d) Knowledge on the fundamental concepts of Fluvial Hydraulics (open channel flows and soil erosion)
Syllabus 1. THEORETICAL BACKGROUNG: Hydraulics complements; Dimensional analysis; Physical properties of sediments; Soil erosion and sediment production.
2. FLOWS OVER MOBILE BEDS: Beginning of bed-load transport; Bed forms; Fluvial morphology; Resistance to flow; Transport of sediments; Stable channels.
3. FLUVIAL REGULATION AND FLOOD CONTROL STRUCTURES: ex. regulation of the main channel; rip-rap revetments; groynes; dykes; flood control with detention basin; use of vegetation.
4. EROSION PREDICTION: Generalized bed erosion; Local scour; Countermeasures.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria This Course Unit involves 60h of scheduled contact activities organized in theoretical classes (45T: presentation of syllabus and learning of methods and techniques in the context of fluvial design works) and practical classes (15PL: where students, working in groups, perform the practical work, and may include a technical visit). The drawing up of the reports is part of the autonomous work. The application of knowledge will be ensured through the use of numerical modeling software of different river flow scenarios in a river section.
The evaluation is carried out in 2 phases:
- Continuous assessment: 2 tests (theoretical and practical) and 1 practical work carried out in class, with the submission of reports.
- Final exam: 1 exam (theoretical and practical) and 1 practical work carried out in class, with the submission of reports, for admitted students.
Final Grade = 50% Average of the tests or final exam + 50% Grade of the practical work. The weighting is valid for all exam periods.
