The IT Branch – Covilhã is a research unit of the IT (Instituto de Telecomunicações, Pole of Lisbon).
It is hosted by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Beira Interior, the unit comprises a team of 52 members - including 22 Integrated Researchers, 11 Collaborators, and 19 PhD Students - dedicated to advancing knowledge across six major Research Clusters:
- Applied Mathematics (group coordinator: Celino Miguel)
- Multimedia Signal Processing (group coordinator: António Pinheiro
- Network Applications and Services (group coordinator: Pedro Inácio)
- Networks Architectures and Protocols (group coordinator: Frutuoso Silva)
- Pattern Recognition and Automatic Learning (group coordinator: Hugo Proença)
- Power electronics (group coordinator: Maria Calado)
Scientific Output & Impact:
The research unit maintains a strong scientific track record, reflecting its commitment to excellence and knowledge transfer: 2539 Publications 383 Theses (PhD and MSc) 13 Patents 59 Awards Key Projects Research efforts are supported by national and international funding.

The branch provides specialized infrastructure for its researchers, including the following laboratories: Communications and Multimedia - Covilhã Telecommunications - Covilhã Members have access to high-performance networks, computer clusters, and a wide range of international scientific journals.
