Profile of the programme
The first cycle of studies in Physics and Applications aims to train graduates with a solid foundation in physics, enabling them to apply theoretical, computational and laboratory methods of physics in the analysis and resolution of physical problems, and allowing them to confidently face the continuation of studies in UBI 2nd cycle courses or in other national or foreign higher education institutions Two courses are offered. The first, entitled Physics, is aimed at those who want a training focused on Physics and its applications, addressed in a wide range of optional curricular units, with a view to further studies in Physics or related areas and applications of Physics. The second, entitled Physics and Chemistry, has an important weight in Chemistry, to enable graduates access to the 2nd cycle courses in Physics and Chemistry Teaching |
Key learning outcomes
Graduates of the 1st cycle course in Physics will have a solid background in the main branches of Physics (Classical and Quantum Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics, Field Theory) and their applications. Depending on the course and the optional curricular units they choose, they will have more reinforced training in the areas of chemistry, science and biomedical technologies or other applications, allowing them to face with confidence the pursuit of 2nd cycle studies on more specific topics in physics, in Physics and Chemistry Teaching or engineering.
Physics graduates will display strong abilities for analysis, resolution and communication of scientific and technical problems, will be able to keep up the the evolution of information and communication technologies and use them efficiently, will understand, adapt and build models of complex physical systems. They will be familiar with laboratory techniques and procedures and measuring devices and demonstrate dexterity and competence in research and in industrial product development and production resulting from research in Applied Physics |
Occupational profiles of graduates
As a 1st Cycle course, it is expected that the majority of students in the course intend to pursue studies in 2nd and 3rd Cycle courses. Still, graduates of physics courses have strong employability not only in technical and scientific contexts (senior technical personnel in research and development laboratories, researchers, high-tech industries, science communication) but also in software companies, consultancy and market and risk analysis. |
Learning facilities
University of Beira Interior has high quality facilities: conventional classrooms with multimedia equipment, laboratories (in particular those most used in physics courses: Mechanics and Electromagnetism, Atomic and Nuclear Physics, Optics, Electronics, Digital Systems), study rooms with computer equipment, library, areas and equipment and for sports, cafeterias and student residences. |
