Profile of the programme The PhD program in Design aims to contribute to advanced training in Design and promote critical reflection, research, creativity and ethics in the creation, development and dissemination of new ideas, expressions and skills in the extensive field of Design and related areas. This reality will expand the conceptual and projectual space of Design and will allow the creation of new solutions, translated into physical and digital artefacts, communication models, services, systems or strategies relevant to the cultural and creative industries sector. The research promoted should contribute to consolidating the area of knowledge with repercussions on the theory, teaching and practice of Design, with a positive impact on people, society and the environment.
Key learning outcomes The PhD program in Design ensures the acquisition of the following key learning outcomes:
Ability to develop original research and generate new knowledge about the issues, nature, thinking and practice of Design;
Deep and critical understanding of the culture, expressions, methods and role of Design in society;
Mastery of the pedagogical principles of “learning to know” and “learning to do” in line with the objectives of each project and investigation;
Ability to develop research and technology transfer processes;
Aptitude for attracting financing and developing Design services;
Ability to carry out advanced research and design practices with design theorists and professionals in a wide variety of fields and from an inter and transdisciplinary perspective;
Aptitude to contribute to the objectives and mission of the University of Beira Interior, dignifying its humanist, scientific and project roots, promoting sustainability and positive change in society and the territory where it operates.
Occupational profiles of graduates The UBI PhD in Design course provides professional skills in the broad sphere of Cultural and Creative Industries and in various areas of Design, such as Industrial Design, Product Design, Graphic Design, Communication Design, Multimedia Design, Digital Games Design, Fashion Design, and Interior Design.

Within the different areas of activity in the Cultural and Creative Industries and Design, the following types of activity stand out:

Creative activity in companies providing services and creating Design products;
Design Management in its various aspects, such as leading creative teams and general support for business management activities;
Research in Design within different types of organisations, such as companies, research centres, competence centres, sectoral business associations, and other public and private bodies;
Teaching in Higher Education, in the area of Design and related areas;
Teaching within the scope of professional training in Design;
Teaching at various levels of education in the public and private sectors.
Learning facilities The University of Beira Interior has a vast infrastructure for the development of activities of a theoretical and applied nature of the PhD in Design. The following stand out:
The R&D Unit and research laboratories at Labcom/iA* and UBI;
The Design+ Lab, a space for study, experimentation, and workshops for the various Design courses, with resources from the areas of photography, IT and technology;
Modeling spaces and areas for 3D printing, CNC, among others, for the development of models and prototypes for materials such as ceramics, metals, and wood;
The UBI FabLab;
The room with multimedia resources to support the 3rd cycle;
The UBI Central Library with access to numerous databases such as B-On, Scielo, EBSCO, Web of Knowledge, and Scopus, among others.
The space destined for the Arts Department, located in the former UBI print shop, is in the launch phase of the execution competition, which includes several fundamental aspects for the activities of the study cycle.
