Owning a Master’s degree or a second cycle in Paper Engineering or related areas.
Owning a Bachelor’s or graduate degree in higher education and owning a recognized academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized as relevant by the Scientific Program and approved by the Scientific Committee.

Profile of the programme The Ph. D. degree in Paper Engineering aims to prepare highly qualified and autonomous human resources, able to contribute to extending the frontiers of knowledge in science and technology of pulp, paper, processing, and related areas, carrying out basic and applied research
The program is supported by an academic staff with Ph.D. degrees in Paper Engineering and in Chemistry, and also by well-equipped laboratories
The specialized training, oriented to the university and business environment, allows the professionals perform activities in research, development and innovation, particularly the optimization of manufacturing processes, the design and production of innovative products with new functionalities, as well as the development of processes and products more economic and environmentally sustainable
Key learning outcomes The student should have the ability to understand and integrate the knowledge in paper science and technology and in related areas
The student must have acquired skills and methodologies to carry out research in the area of paper science and technology and in related areas
The student should gain the ability to conceive, design, adapt, and perform research in the area of Paper Engineering, respecting the requirements imposed by the standards of academic quality and integrity
At the end of the course the student should be able to carry out research autonomously or in groups, identify opportunities for innovation, and exploit research results
Make a significant body of original research that contributes to extending the frontiers of knowledge, part of which deserves international publicity in peer review journals
At the end of the course the student should be able to critically analyze, evaluate and synthesize new and complex ideas in paper science and technology
At the end of the course the student should be able to communicate with their peers, the remaining academic community and the society in general about the paper science and technology
At the end of the course the student should be able to promote, in a knowledge-based society, the technological, social and cultural progress, under academic and /or professional context

Learning facilities The Chemistry Department is fully equipped to support academic and research activities in the area of Paper Science and Technology. In addition to the research laboratories in the field of chemistry, the department has specific laboratory facilities in the area of Paper Science and Technology, namely:
Laboratory for Microscopy and Image Analysis;
Technological Laboratory of Pulp, Paper and converting Processes;
Laboratory of Chemistry and Chemical Technology;
Physical Testing Laboratory and Printing;
Paper Technology Center

There are also other general facilities, including:
Central Library (open from 9 to 23h);
The UBI offers its teachers and researchers the databases of journals and scientific conferences for consultation and "download";
Informatics Center (open 24 hours);
Service networks (internal and external);
Service permanent access to the Internet (with e-mail, telnet, www).
